‘Twas the night before Christmas, down in Carlsbad town,
The Rudolphs were playing, trying not to frown.
In the MasterSports league, they gave it their all,
But the first game they lost, oh, what a close call!
The 3rd and 4th-grade boys, so eager and spry,
Dribbled and passed, reaching for the sky.
Down by one point, they fought till the end,
Perseverance their ally, on defense they’d depend.
In the first half, Luca “Call me Peter” Page,
Tried a buzzer-beater, but alas, it hit the cage.
The rim said, “Not today,” with a cheeky grin,
But Luca didn’t falter, he’d try again.
In the fourth quarter, with hope in their eyes,
Luca took the shot, reaching for the skies.
Almost a game-winner, the crowd held their breath,
But the ball danced on the rim, teasing them to death.
Then there was Lincoln, oh what a feat,
Tying up possessions, making opponents meet defeat.
The “dirty sock” award, he proudly displayed,
Forcing turnovers, the other team dismayed.
Harrison, tall and mighty, blocking shots in the lane,
Tried to stop a put-back, but alas, in vain.
The other team, just like the Rudolphs, you see,
Never gave up, like a holiday decree.
They played great defense, just like the Rudolph crew,
Putting up one more shot when hope seemed askew.
A miraculous put-back, a victory in sight,
The Rudolphs fell short, oh, what a night!
Coach Steve, in his wisdom, called names amiss,
Alex England, or was it Greg?
A laughable blunder, a coaching faux pas,
But the Rudolphs forgave, for Christmas is a time for ha-has.
Coaches Steve and Aron, texting late into the night,
Excited by the Rudolphs’ unwavering fight.
Plans for improvement, schemes to unfold,
Highlighting strengths, turning bronze into gold.
So here’s to the Rudolphs, a team with heart,
Perseverance their gift, right from the start.
In Carlsbad, they’ll shine like stars so bright,
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!
Thanks to the parents and to Griff’s parents Lauren and Chuck for the snacks!
